Monte Bernardi
Mar 18, 2026
The Monte Bernardi estate covers 53 hectares, 15 of which are under vine. The vineyards are situated in the hilly, southern-most region of Panzano, an area long acknowledged as one of the Grand Crus of Chianti Classico.
The Schmelzer family purchased Monte Bernardi in 2003, headed up by winemaker Michael Schmelzer, who studied viticulture in Australia before following his heart to Italy.
The estate are passionate about traditional farming and winemaking practices and after delving back into the Estates history, believe they are the key to producing the uniquely expressive wines of the Monte Bernardi Estate.
They have been certified Organic and Biodynamic since 2004 and by adapting these time-honoured and proven methods to specific vineyard sites, guided by an intuitive approach to seasonal and climate challenges, they produce exceptional wines, respecting vintage and regional character.
Molly and I were lucky enough to be invited to a winemakers lunch with Michael Schmelzer at Pasta Regina in Bristol where Michael talked us through & we got to taste the range of wines, accompanied by a delicious bowl of pasta.

The wines are pure, elegant, perfumed and had a real sense of place, there were two that stood out to us and we now have them in stock and even better Retromarcia is on by the glass this weekend!

Retromarcia 2022
Deep, ruby red with hints of purple. Clean, intense, with aromas of blackberry, cherry and red plums, anise, spice and orange peel. In the mouth it is fresh and fruity, medium-bodied, well balanced with a nice structure, juicy acidity and a long finish.
