Lowerland Wines
Aug 26, 2026
If you read Lloyd’s last email you’ll have seen we have some oldies in that once adorned our shelves many years ago in the first shop. Well these are also a returning favourite!
Lowerland is the Coetzee family farm on the banks of the Orange River near Prieska in the Northern Cape in South Africa. Spanning 12,000ha, it is primarily dedicated to pasture and grain, but there’s also 9ha of vineyard established in the early 2000’s.
Bertie Coetzee is passionate about viticulture and cattle, he leads the farm’s transition to diverse, resilient systems, producing everything from stone ground organic flours and pastured meats to award-noted wines, while focusing on soil regeneration, closed-loop practices, and nutrient-dense food from soil to soul.
Today, he is an organic farmer making wine on the family farm that lies on the South Bank of the Orange River. The high altitude and desert-like climatic conditions (dry, hot days and cold nights) as well as the nearby river create a unique terroir where grapes can be produced disease-free, with small berries, complex flavours and a fresh acidity.
The grapes are transported 900km South to Paarl, where winemaker Lukas Van Loggerenberg (another name you should recognise from our shelves!) oversees the vinification.
