Hanneke-krüger - Vino pH
Sep 12, 2025
A new project from a legend in the game, wines we just couldn’t be without here at Chester’s!
South Africa has a place in my heart, for obvious reasons. But whenever I meet South Africans I have this fondness and connection that I cannot explain. It probably helps with my love for the wines & the people behind them. The wines are honest, raw and more often than not exciting with real character!
Hanneke has quite the CV, not to name drop but she has been head wine maker since 2018 for none other than the King of the Swartland, Adi Badenhorst.
I met Hanneke back in summer of 2023 when we stayed on the Badenhorst Farm, we had a great time tasting through the barrel samples of the new wines, touring the vineyards before the end of season party in which winemakers from across the Swartland attended, as you could imagine, this got a little out of hand…
Since then, many bottles of wine made by the hands of Hanneke have passed through the doors of Chester’s, with the Badenhorst wines a firm favourite among us.
We were delighted to hear about Hanneke’s own project ‘Vino pH’. Vino pH was founded by the dynamic French & South African Dream Team, Pauline Roux (p) & Hanneke Krüger (H), two young, passionate women winemakers driven by a curiosity and energy for life. They are friends foremost, but make a pretty mean team when it comes to making things happen and creating magic. They met being workout and running friends, while working together in the Paardeberg while Pauline was at Lammershoek and Hanneke at Adi Badenhort’s cellar.
They both see wine in the same way: a product of science but also of the soul. They are driven and very disciplined when it comes to winemaking, passionate about wine and sharing the same work and life ethic. Curious and experimental, they apply their minds to puzzling tasks and like to understand the why and how, but ultimately rely on their feminine intuition and feelings.
This series of wines is a very fun and delightful addition to our offering here at Chester’s, the wines have a real winemaker trait, all of them a super juicy and expressive, whilst maintaining fantastic elegance, about as drinkable few bottles of wine we’ve tasted this year!
The fruit is sourced from around the Cape, handled carefully with low intervention in the cellar, bottled with minimal sulphur and allowed be full of joy and energy.
