Sergio Molino, Barolo & more!

Jan 28, 2025

Sergio Molino, a Nebbiolo Master

Ernesto Molino, Sergio’s father, planted the nebbiolo vineyards in Bricco Rocca in 1951. He chose a selection of the best cuttings from the nearby vineyards and grafted 3000 vines.

Sergio has taken the reins in more recent times, the vineyards have gone through organic certification and have been since 2013.

We love them and they have solved a problem for our offering from this part of Italy.

Nebbiolo is tricky, often too expensive (especially from Barolo) and easily misunderstood. It often leaves people wanting more, I can attest to that, maybe it’s because we don’t get the opportunity to drink these great wines often enough?

Barolo is something people desire, often at Christmas, but it’s not a ‘Big’ wine as people often ask for. “I like a Big Barolo or Amarone” is a phrase often heard this time of year, but the 2 wines are polar opposites. Barolo is light in colour, elegant in the glass, has racy acidity, tannic structure and can often be austere in its youth. It is a wine to love and behold and to nurture… unlike its cousin from Verona. Amarone feels a little naughty, indulgent, hedonistic, boozy and will probably leave you feeling a little dirty in the morning… anyway, I’m rambling a bit here!

The wines of Sergio Molino are none of the above and they deliver on all fronts. A touch  of class from the Barolo, a bit of naughtiness from the Barbera and full on lust with the Langhe Nebbiolo, which is just about the most delicious bottle of red wine we’ve had the pleasure of drinking this year!

Lucky for you, our latest allocation of just 90 have just arrived! A mega bonus for you & offers incredible value! They won’t hang around for long!

Enough of me talking nonsense, here are the wines…

Barolo "Bricco Rocca" DOCG – 2020

£60 per bottle

Less than 1,700 bottles produced from just over 3/4 of a hectare. The vines were planted in 1951 with others in 1975 and 2000.

Incipient tobacco, earthy, and spicy complexity greets the nose, which remains fresh and airy. The dark fruit is muscular, tense and dense with lovely spice and earth on the back palate. The tannins are lovely, sweet, tight, and lend elegance to the long, detailed finish. It is not built on fruit but it's fabulous with terrific tension and nuance. Simply superb!

Show me a better bottle of Barolo at the same money and I’ll eat Chester’s hat.

"Melia" Barbera d'Alba Superiore DOC – 2021

£45 per bottle

An excellent Barbera that manages to be serious and yet immensely pleasurable. We absolutely inhaled a bottle when it arrived recently! Saturated dark fruit flavours with a twist of citrus add considerable interest. Surely even better down the road but just splendid as it is now. An endless generator of interesting new nuances and complexity.

Nebbiolo Langhe DOC – 2021

£30 per bottle

This Nebbiolo by Molino is getting hammered over the festive season in our house! a subtle and elegant interpretation of Nebbiolo, with a fine profile and a clear intriguing hints of flowers and fruits of the undergrowth. On the palate the velvety tannins reveal a delightful sensation and each sip reveals an imprint of freshness that immediately invites you to take another gulp… bloody love it.
