Barbacan

Mar 05, 2026

The long awaited (by myself and Lloyd!) Barbacan Bianco and Rosato have arrived!

Last year we visited Valtellina and visited a few of our favourite growers from the region including the guys at Barbacan!

Much to our Joy, we were offered a vineyard tour to see some of the plots that make one of our favourite wines. If you haven’t seen the vineyards of Valtellina, they are quite something! Super steep terraces that adorn the south facing Northern slopes that can only be reached by the fiercest, most nimble of cars, the Fiat Panda 4x4, preferably one from the 70’s or 80’s, much to our joy this is the car Luca directed us towards… Lloyd is still in hope of finding one to purchase!

We spent the next hour rattling round single dirt track roads without much care for how close our lives were to ending, 5 of us in the smallest car ever made, of which 3 of the guys were a comfortable 6ft+ where I perched between them like a rose between thorns..

Back in the comfort of the cellar we tasted through the wines with Luca, which included the Rosato & Bianco which neither of us had tasted before, they were right on the top of our list to taste & absolutely delivered!

The wines of Barbacan are ethereal, they all show a beautiful poise and are very terroir driven. The way Barbacan work is with utmost respect for the land, everything is beyond organic and there is no rush in the cellar, natural fermentation, the wines are very elegant and we love them here at Chester’s.

We have always stocked the Rosso and after a long 9 months we finally have the Rosato and Bianco, we also managed to get the last of the 2021 Rosso!

Rosato 2024

Fresh strawberries, red currants, candied rose petals and delicate floral notes. The crisp palate reveals layers of wild berries and citrus zest, supported by a distinct mineral character. Light-bodied yet vibrant, it carries tangy acidity into a smoky, earthy finish, with fine bergamot black tea–like tannins throughout.

Farasciole 2022

The Chiavennasca Bianca and Chiavennaschino vines grow on steep terraces in sandy, mineral-rich soils.

Ripe yellow fruit, fennel, Mediterranean herbs, floral notes, and mineral nuances, elegant, and fine, with lively freshness, a touch of alpine sapidity.

Ā£46 per bottle
